This lake is a central feature of Decatur Northwest, a community in the San Juan Islands where my parents own a cabin. The lake is quite swimmable in late summer and is a favorite hangout for kids of all ages. I've spent summer weekends and occasionally full weeks at Decatur since age 16. Decatur is a place we go to escape from the busy working world, relax, and play.
One of the unique aspects of Decatur Northwest is that 90% of its land, including all the waterfront, is communally owned by all 100 or so home sites. Home owners purchase a 75-foot diameter "building circle," to which the community provides road and utility access. This design encourages wandering, socializing, and involvement in the community.
